Surface embroidery is a kind of Embroidery that uses one or more stitches to represent a design. Unlike Cross-Stitch which is usually done on a specific type of fabric to help with counting and maintaining straight lines, surface embroidery can be done on many kinds of fabric. There are many different traditions with their own constrained vocabularies of stitches, colors, and design types, but you can also mix and match from all of these.
