This Surface Embroidery is a quote from the IMLS-funded Data Speculations Forum that I attended in early 2025, reading “I am the sin eater” using Turkey Stitch, on a busy, colorful, abstract quilting cotton fabric. The logos for SciHub and LibGen are present on either side of the text, although they are deliberately hard to see from the front. At the top of the piece, in binary, is the text “dead elephant”, a flippant reference to the announced shutdown of the HathiTrust Research Center.
This piece is not particularly data-heavy, but it uses Event Data and Data from Text, representing it as embroidered text of one sort or another.
