From 2024-present, Pam Lach has created data visualizations of her sleep and insomnia, through a spiral of different-colored Z shapes, some with beads. This Surface Embroidery uses color and beads to represent different data.
Before Pam came up with this brilliant representation of the idea, I was noodling around with embroidery and insomnia, but I had a lot of trouble with the layout (below). I also abandoned the project in 2024 as my life radically changed, and the insomnia that was the driving motivation for doing the project disappeared. There’s a longer write-up of all that here.
