A machine knit striped scarf

I used a Circular knitting machine to create a scarf of my weekly standing meetings for 2022, looking back at my calendar and email to gather the data (Organizational Data). These meetings were for my academic department (green), my immediate organization in the library (blue), the Humanities and Area Studies librarian meeting I attended (purple), and the Research Data Services group in the library that had recently formed (goldenrod). If the meeting was held for a given week, it appeared in its color; otherwise, it appeared in black (representing negative space). Weeks with work trips were represented in yellow; weeks with vacation were represented in turquoise. There were 208 rows, representing up to 4 meetings per week.

Surfacing data in this way also served as a form of commentary, particularly on the Research Data Services meetings that were billed as vital, but — after a slow start to the year — existed in a small burst in the late spring / early summer, then were not held at all until the Friday before winter break. (Little did I realize at the time that that December meeting would also be the last meeting until 2025.)
