Sonja Kuijpers’s A View on Despair is not a textile, but this detailed, artistic data visualization of suicide in the Netherlands in 2017 is an excellent example of taking Civic Data, looking at several different facets (gender, age, method), and thinking about how to render them in a cohesive image. The piece uses size and color variations to represent different age groups, shape to represent different methods of suicide, quantity of different shapes to represent the number, and organization to differentiate men (left) vs women (right).
