Sewing is the textile craft that involves attaching pieces of fabric to one another using thread, and/or stitching thread onto fabric in different patterns, for mending, reinforcement, and/or decoration. Each of these is different enough in its necessary equipment, its techniques, and traditional designs that we will treat it separately.

Garment sewing

Garment Sewing is a broad category for creating clothes. Creating clothing designs from scratch requires solid spatial reasoning skills and an understanding of how bodies are shaped and move, but if you struggle with those skills there is no shortage of patterns you can use and adapt. To sew garments with non-stretchy Woven fabric, you use a standard Sewing machine; for stretchy Knit fabric, you use a Serger with a Coverstitch to finish the hems.

Quilting

Quilting typically involves combining small pieces of colored fabric (usually non-stretchy Woven fabric) into a quilt top with some kind of pattern or design, layering it with some kind of insulation and a backing, and then stitching some design over the top of it all to keep the layers together.

Embroidery

There are many different traditions of index, some of which require specific fabrics or types of thread.
