Erica Lord’s series The Codes We Carry: Beadwork as DNA recreates computer-generated DNA/RNA microarray visualizations using a traditional Indigenous glass beading craft (a form of Weaving), which takes the form of Alaskan Athabaskan baby belts / burden straps. Each bead represents a data point. The test used for the original computer visualization (Scientific Data) detects the presence and progression of a disease, and she chose diseases that disproportionately affect Native populations.
