My first attempt at a textile data visualization, years before I imagined I’d start a Textile Makerspace or teach a class on it, dates to 2013 when I wanted to make some kind of quilt celebrating my (now ex-)husband’s PhD completion. It turned out rather wonky, and in frustration, I threw it in the back of a closet and forgot about it for many years. I created several different custom fabrics for the piece, mapping different aspects of his grad school journey to different parts of the image. I did a detailed writeup of the data and mapping to textile features.
