A laser cut wood plaque with metadata and a small woven tapestry

50 hours was my attempt to process my father (“Grampy”) and his wife (“Granny”) visiting me (recently divorced) and my kids in December 2024, then leaving abruptly. The piece is woven using a Tapestry loom, and has the organization of a time-tracking spreadsheet, with each hour represented by one row. The more interpersonal engagement is involved in an activity, the more vibrant the color that represents it. This visualization uses interaction data.

When Grampy and Granny left abruptly and unexpectedly, several activities (opening presents, getting donuts before school) were left hanging, as indicated by the colored thread tangled in the dangling fringe. Grampy and Granny’s portion of the weaving has short-cut fringe; the rest of the weaving has longer strings filled with beads that depict the text exchanges between myself and various friends after they suddenly left.
